About Me: The Long and Short of It

This morning, Andreas over at xgrape.net responded to a post I made previously. He brought up another angle of the “about” page that I’d never thought about: short versus long.

Let’s start with the former. You’ll usually find these short “blurbs” in the sidebar or header of a site, possibly with an image. We’re starting to see a lot of these around. These don’t tell much, but they give some idea of what the site is about, and could possibly entice the reader to subscribe.

Then you have the longer standalone pages. These are usually longer, with a lot more substance and flavour. They are usually harder to write, but will give the reader a much better idea of who you are, and also further extend your online presence.

I think the perfect balance is some mixture of the two. That way, first-time visitors or people in a hurry will have something quick and easy to savour. Regular readers can then have more substance to enjoy at their leisure. After all, happy visitors makes for a happy blogger.

Who knew such a simple topic could have create so much discussion? Stay tuned for tips on how to really spice things up. It’s coming.

    • For me, the hardest part is writing something that is not too long, so that I can capture the readers attention and keep it.

    • “entice the reader to subscribe”. Like said before, I think the content you push out should play the role here, not an about page. I usually first visit a site because I somehow found an article there, and if I like it, I’ll subscribe. Whoever the guy behind it is, doesn’t really interest me at that point.

    • @Joe: I’ve been writing for quite sometime now, so I might have a trick or two to share. Look for the post sometime soon.

@Andreas: I totally agree that content is king; what I meant was the about page increases the chance of subscribers.

If there is nothing mentioned about the writer, I feel slightly skeptical. Perhaps I’m reading a spam blog? (which makes me less likely to subscribe)
