What’s the AppleTV’s USB Port (Really) For?
… said my friend. Intrigued, I did a bit of research and found that Apple clearly states “the USB port on the back of the Apple TV is only used for service and diagnostics”. Sounds reasonable, but I don’t think they’re telling the truth.
Why USB? Why use a standard that is easily hackable by mere mortals? Why not use a more proprietary standard (like most diagnostic ports are)? But if you’re planning for future expansion, then the USB port starts to make some sense.
A new Apple patent surfaced recently detailing a system involving a central multimedia hub (possibly an AppleTV) that utilises several external “modules,” all controlled through a centralized menu system on the hub. Now, when you step back and look at it, the USB port is starting to make more sense.

Imagine being able to hook up accessories like DVD players, iPods or even a Slingbox and controlling it via AppleTV. It would seem foolish for Apple not to allow other manufacturers to produce these “modules”, given the success of the iPod with 3rd-party accessories. Oh and Apple, while you’re at it, add some more USB ports to AppleTV 2.0, ok?
If Apple chooses to pursue this path, it would most certainly be a wise move. Would I change my mind and buy one? I don’t know, it’s priced way out of my budget right now, plus, I don’t watch too much TV, so it might not be very useful for me.
Front Row suits my needs perfectly, anyway.
