Another Great Entry

OLPC Woes

The OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) is a project that has been under the limelight for quite sometime. Initiated by MIT’s Media Lab, the goal was to create a $100 laptop to educate the world’s children. Well, there’s just one problem.

Turns out that manufacturing issues and other setbacks have risen the cost to $140 and recently to $175. $100 for a laptop is expensive when you consider how many kids there are in the developing nations. Raising it to $175 could potentially be a deal-breaker.

So how do you lower the price? Well, for starters you could sell it at a higher price (say $300) to more fortunate kids in the developed world, and use the price difference to pay for the remainder.

And how about creating a more conservative version of the laptop? I don’t think anyone above the age of 10 would like anything in bright green with antennae that could pass off as Shrek’s ears. Having a simple, black laptop at $300 could entice a lot more buyers.

OLPC

You know, I appreciate what the Media Lab has done, but there is still some work before it’s truly a “$100 laptop”. Would you like a $300 laptop instead?
