Another Great Entry

Is MySpace Still ‘My’ Space?

MySpace is in the news. Again. Nope, no one’s offering them some ridiculous amount of money, but remember when they blocked Revver videos and then Imeem widgets? Well, it’s PhotoBucket’s turn. The reason? Embedded advertising.

MySpace claims its not blocking competitors content, but merely content with embedded advertising. Fair enough, serving your ads on someone else’s page to get more hits and traffic (for free) is just ridiculous. It’s like stealing someone else’s pie and stuffing your face with it. Not cool.

While I do sympathize (slightly) with Myspace, let’s look at it from the users’ perspective. By taking the ‘My’ out of MySpace, they’re taking the one thing that made them truly unique: to allow users to express themselves as creatively as possible. MySpace has to be careful with how it manages external content. Without that, they might as well shut-down shop right now.

Besides, Myspace is so yesterday. Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook is today.
