Another Great Entry

5 Free Apps for MacBook Users

I recently made the switch from a desktop to a MacBook. One of the things I discovered was that my software needs changed drastically. Features like speed and ease-of-use were slowly being replaced with robust security and reliable backups.

With that in mind, here are 5 great apps that every MacBook user should have.

1. smcFanControl

SMCFanControl IconThe first generation MacBooks were notorious for running hotter than usual. Thankfully, smcFanControl allows you to manually adjust the CPU fan speed to allow for improved cooling. If you own a MacBook Pro, you can also control the fan on the graphics processor.

A great app if you use the MacBook on your lap for extended periods. Price: Free, Official Site

2. iAlertU

iAlertU IconWith mobility comes the increased risk of theft. Why not protect your valuable investment by using iAlertU? This app uses the SMS (sudden motion sensor) of your MacBook to detect movement, whereby an audible alarm can be triggered. What I really like is the ability to capture a photo (of the thief) and send it to an email address.

iAlertU is currently available as a free beta, but is still worth checking out. Price: Free, Official Site

3. VirtueDesktops

VirtueDesktops IconIf you can’t wait for Spaces in Leopard and really want multiple desktops, then VirtueDesktops is your answer. It can create an unlimited number of “virtual screens” and adds Applescript capabilities and delicious eye candy into the mix. More screens = more productivity.

Sadly, VirtueDesktops is no longer in active development because this functionality will be available in OS X 10.5. Price: Free, Official Site

4. Disk Utility

Disk Utility IconSecurity is essential for portable computers, and what better way to encrypt your data than using Disk Utility? This app ships with every new Mac, and makes applying AES-128 encryption a breeze.

Simply create a new sparse image, assign a password, drag your files into it and you’re fully protected. Price: Free, Under Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility

5. iBackup

iBackup IconEveryone knows notebooks are prone to more “knocks and bumps” than desktop computers, so be sure to backup frequently. iBackup allows scheduled backups of your files and folders and supports plugins for backing up system settings.

It also backs up your application settings, which sweetens the deal. Available at a low cost of just $0. Price: Free, Official Site

Those are my picks. What are yours?
